EMAC School of Aviation

Learn to fly — from first solo to CPL.

EMAC trains pilots in Recreational Aircraft under the auspices of Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus), delivered by our qualified and friendly instructional staff. For General Aviation (RPL, PPL, CPL and beyond) we partner with Moorabbin Aviation Services — one of Australia's most established CASA-approved flight training organisations.

Recreational pathway · RAAus

Training Prerequisites

Before you can be issued a Student Pilot Certificate you must:

  • Be a minimum of 15 years old (no maximum age, subject to medical)
  • Hold a health standard equivalent to a private motor vehicle driver licence and declare it to RAAus
  • Have sufficient proficiency in English to communicate verbally and read written material
  • Hold either a temporary RAAus membership (max 3 hours training) or full RAAus membership
  • Hold either an EMAC Social membership (pre-solo only) or a full Flying membership

RPC Endorsements

During or after your RPC, you can undertake additional training for specific endorsements. EMAC also offers Instructor Training and Biennial Flight Reviews (BFRs).

  • Radio Operator — operate an aeronautical radio
  • Passenger Carrying — carry one passenger
  • Cross Country — fly beyond 25nm (min. 12 hrs add'l)
  • Tail Wheel — fly tailwheel aircraft
  • Advanced Pilot Award — higher competency levels
  • Formation — fly in formation with other aircraft
  • In-flight Adjustable Propeller — advanced prop systems
  • Retractable Undercarriage — retractable gear aircraft

General Aviation pathway · CASA

Training Partnership

Echuca Moama Aero Club × Moorabbin Aviation Services

For the full General Aviation pathway — RPL, PPL, CPL, instrument and multi-engine ratings — we've partnered with Moorabbin Aviation Services, one of Australia's longest-established CASA-approved flight training organisations (Part 141 / Part 142, RTO 22495, CRICOS 02530B). Established in 1990 as the Australian National Airline College, MAS has trained pilots across every level from first solo through to airline cadetships.

The result: you start at YECH with EMAC, do your RAAus RPC, then transition straight into a CASA pathway with MAS instructors — no need to leave the friendly club on the Murray to chase the bigger licence. Talk to us about how to structure your training to minimise duplication.

CASA licence pathway

Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL)

The first CASA licence on the GA pathway. Lets you fly single-engine aircraft < 1500kg in day VFR within a training area (typically 25nm of departure).

  • Min age: 16 to be issued, 15 to fly solo
  • Min hours: 25 (typically 35-45 in practice)
  • Theory: RPL theory exam (BAK level)
  • Medical: CASA Class 1, 2 or Recreational Aviation Medical Practitioner's Certificate
  • Pathway: Add Navigation, English Proficiency & Controlled Aerodrome endorsements to fly further afield

Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)

For pilots who want to fly for hire or reward — charter, instructing, agricultural, aerial work, airline pathway. CPL is delivered exclusively through MAS, typically over 12-18 months full-time or longer part-time.

  • Min hours: 150 (integrated course) or 200 (non-integrated)
  • Theory: 7 CPL theory subjects, each with CASA exam
  • Medical: CASA Class 1 mandatory
  • MAS delivers: integrated AVI50222 Diploma of Aviation (CPL Aeroplane) and stand-alone CPL training
  • Aircraft used: EMAC and MAS fleet — training conducted at Echuca (YECH) or Moorabbin as operationally required

Already have RAAus hours? Up to 150 hours of RAAus PIC time can be credited toward the CPL aeronautical experience requirement. We'll help you structure your training so nothing is wasted.

GA Endorsements & Ratings (via MAS)

Once you hold an RPL or PPL you can layer on these CASA endorsements and ratings to extend your privileges. All available through Moorabbin Aviation Services.

  • Navigation Endorsement — fly beyond the training area
  • Controlled Aerodrome — operate in/out of towered airports
  • Controlled Airspace — transit and operate in C/D class airspace
  • Multi-Engine Aeroplane (MEA) — fly multi-engine piston aircraft
  • Night VFR Rating — fly visually at night
  • Single-Engine Instrument Rating (IR) — IFR in cloud and IMC
  • Multi-Engine Instrument Rating (MEIR) — full IFR in twin engines
  • CSU / Retractable Undercarriage — constant-speed prop and retract design features
  • Tail Wheel — tailwheel aeroplane design feature
  • Instructor Rating — Grade 3 → 2 → 1 instructor progression
  • King Air C90/B200 type rating — turboprop heavy single/twin
  • Citation 500/550/560 type rating — light-jet type endorsement

Important information. Persons undertaking flying training and other types of flying in recreational (RAAus) aircraft are advised that there are risks involved. Recreational aircraft used for pilot training are constructed, operated and maintained under exemptions from the regulations that apply to CASA-registered aircraft. While similar rule sets apply, it must be accepted that the overall safety of recreational flying is generally below the well-known commercial air transport standards in Australia. General Aviation training delivered with our partner Moorabbin Aviation Services is conducted under CASA Part 141 / Part 142 regulations on CASA-certified aircraft.
